Are you experiencing a lift in turnover over the last 2 weeks or do you know someone who is? Is the turnover coming from the male populace of your organization? I ask you this question to raise your awareness and draw your attention to the following:
If you think back to the superbowl or any sporting event you have watched since Super-Sunday, you have likely seen a mix of Careerbuilder.com ads and perhaps one or two from Monster.com. If you are seeing these ads, most of your male associates are seeing them too and of course many women. What do you think your people are thinking when they watch these ads? Do you think they are slapping their knees and getting a good laugh only to appreciate the funny commercial? Or - Do you think they are laughing their way online to look for a new job? If you are a manager, you likely know the answer to this - at least I hope you do. Do you have confidence that your people are not the target audience of careerbuilder or monster?
Who is the target audience? = unhappy employees who feel irrelevant, anonymous, and have no way to measure their successes. Even high level leaders who feel under-appreciated. Basically anyone who is not living under an environment of excellent leadership.
Thanks to a decent selling book by Rick Warren, millions over the last 5 years are trying to discover their purpose in life and work. Also, thanks to Marcus Buckingham, millions of workers are discovering their strengths and realizing they are not operating from a strong point. Oh yeah, "Americans hate their jobs more in the last 20 years than any other time in history" (MSNBC.com). Much to the point of my last post. Careerbuilder and Monster are using emotionally brilliant marketing to appeal to your employees. Monster tells them "your calling is calling." Careerbuilder tells you that a "better job awaits you" and they are both spending mega-millions to get the attention of your people. It's a bit graphic, but watch the video below (email subscribers click the link). It is one of my favorites because it literally shows this girl does not have a heart connection to her work and her boss does not really care. Do your people feel this way?
My two bits of basic advice:
1) If you are in recruiting, use Careerbuilder. Just be sure to set it up before the superbowl next year.
2) Treat your people in such a way that they only laugh at the ads and do not act on them.
