If you are familiar with Good to Great by Jim Collins, the subject of this post likely reminded you of the "Who first, then what" principle. This post however has a somewhat different twist to it...
I recently briefed an article where a CEO was asked, "What advice would you give young leaders?" His answer: It's not so much about what you do early on, but who you work for. Early in your career, who you work for is so much more important than where you work or what you are doing there. I really appreciate this and was reminded how much I agree.
I consider it a great privilege to mentor one of the sharpest, driven, excited college students I have ever met. His name is Jayson Teagle and I am continually proud of him and the decisions he is making. A few months ago, Jayson was weighing his options for "where to work" following his college graduation which is rapidly approaching. You see, Jayson is the type of guy who will deal with the struggle of weighing multiple choices to hopefully pick the best one. The person he is and the gifting he has provides him such options. I know he had some attractive opportunities when it came to big corporate names and even in a role that he was excited about.
What did he do? He chose a much smaller organization that is run on a standard of excellence for their brand and their people. The most important piece of his decision was picking the "who's" he wanted to work for. He chose a place (Giant Partners) where the executive group is very connected to their people and desire the best for the lives of their people. He also took into consideration the location of the company. He knew that in Atlanta he would be surrounded with sharp young people with even sharper values. Jayson looked at the "who first" above anything else and his life and leadership growth will benefit greatly from this decision. It is going to be "who" challenged his gifts and developed him that will prepare him to do amazing things in business as he matures in years.
Oh yeah, the CEO who was quoted in the article I briefed....It's the CEO of where Jayson is going to begin his career after college. It comes to life.
1) If you are an aspiring leader - go to where the best "who's" are.
2) If you are a leader in an organization - are you someone that would attract young talent based on "you" or do you expect your brand and bankroll to do the attracting?
When you are in uncomfortable position and have got no cash to go out from that point, you will have to receive the personal loans. Because that will help you definitely. I take commercial loan every year and feel myself good because of it.
