If you participate your life in the corporate world, you know that "Sustainability" is the buzz word right now. In fact, it really is more than a buzz word, it is a way of doing business for suppliers, customers, retailers, manufactures, etc. I am a fan of this because why would we not want to conduct our business in a way that improves the environment, the quality of life for all who live here? We must utilize our business influence to give to life, not to take from it. I am very fortunate to do business with and even support our partners with improvements in sustainability.
This post is a "call to remember" the most essential element of sustainability and that is human sustainability. You must create an environmentally sustainable workplace for your people. If you are a leader, add a line to your job description - "Responsible for advancing the mood state and the sustainment of my employee engagement." Your people need a place where the environmet they are most attracted to is the one you create regardless of your workplace variables (blue collar, white collar, pink collar, etc)
Our human tendency is to jump on the new bus coming down the road in fear that we will miss out on something. Too often we forget what powers our organizational bus = The People. Get on the sustainability bus, but make sure you are driving it WITH your people not without them. Improving your carbon footprint is very important, but delighting in the human fingerprint is your lifeline. Please do not cut it off.
